Welcome to RRC
Our
Club
The
Raleigh Rowing Center is a non-profit organization that promotes the
sport of rowing for recreation, exercise and competition. Whether you
are a beginning or experienced, competitive rower, the members of RRC
invite you to join us at Lake Wheeler. Our current sculling and sweep rowing equipment
includes two quads (4x), one convertible quad/four (4x/4-), one double
(2x), one convertible double/pair (2x/2-), a recreational single and a
racing single (1x).
RRC is a community partner and works with the City
of Raleigh Parks and Recreation
office and the
staff at Lake Wheeler Park. Our club supports local
rowing
programs including Raleigh Charter High School, NC
State University, Wake Rowing
and Raleigh Junior Rowing.
Since 2002, members of RRC have installed
a 100' launch
dock for the lake's rowers, school programs, kayakers and canoers; and
rack
storage shared with NC State, Wake Rowing and Raleigh Charter.
In 2008, RRC members worked with Raleigh Parks and Rec to
install additional rack storage for 28 singles, eight doubles and eight
quads.
Rowing
is growing at Lake Wheeler!
Our
Members
Raleigh
Rowing Center members have a variety of rowing experience.
Some joined the club to learn to row, and many joined to continue in
the sport they loved so much in college. Some are scullers and others row sweep. Some row
recreationally, and others will compete in regattas. While
racing
may not be for everyone, as a club we organize boats, train
as a team, and enter regattas.
In addition to using club equipment,
many members have their own singles and doubles and can store them on
racks at the Lake. General membership in the club is $225 per
year,
Students: $125, Members with boats: $325.
Where
We Row
Raleigh
Rowing Center is located in Lake Wheeler
Park, part of the Raleigh Park System, 10 miles south of downtown
Raleigh. Lake Wheeler is a 650-acre lake that hosts many recreational
water sports including kayaking, canoeing, sailing, fishing, and
rowing. One lap around the lake is about 5000 meters. This
year,
Lake Wheeler will host several High School and Collegiate
rowing scrimmages and regattas. The storage and launch facilities, and
calm water at Lake Wheeler make this an outstanding venue for rowing
events, and we hope to see many more in the future.
When
We Row
RRC
holds open practices at Lake Wheeler on
Saturday and Sunday mornings. We generally have enough people each
morning to fill up the doubles and quads. The best way to keep up on a
daily basis regarding practices and races is to join the club and our
Yahoo! Group: Triangle Rowing Forum.

Members may row at any time during park operational hours. RRC requires
that members be “checked out” by one of the club’s coaches or
experienced scullers in order to have access to the club equipment.
Directions:
From
Interstate 40 in Raleigh, take exit 297 [Lake
Wheeler
Road/Farmer's Market] and proceed south [away from Raleigh]. Stay on
Lake Wheeler Road. The park entrance is about 4.5 miles South on the
right. (approximately a
10 min. drive depending on traffic and traffic signals). Enter the park
and drive to the waterfront. (map)
